This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from May 5, 1989, features Ken Lormand reporting on the third week of the 1989 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature. He first reports on the week’s headlines. Next, Lormand reports on the Roemer Administration’s proposed $700 million in state budget cuts following the defeat of the tax reform proposal on the April 29th ballot. He interviews: Mark Drennen of the Public Affairs Research Council (PAR); Governor Buddy Roemer; State Representative Sean Reilly; and State Representative Woody Jenkins. Lastly, Lormand conducts an in-studio interview with three journalists: Bob Courtney of WBRZ-TV in Baton Rouge; John Maginnis, publisher of Gris Gris; and David Dodson of the Baton Rouge Business Report. They discuss: the $700 million in proposed cuts; the defeat of Roemer’s tax reform plan; the possibility of creating a statewide lottery; Governor Roemer’s political standing; and the possibility of another tax reform plan.
