This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from April 28, 1989, features Ken Lormand and Roger Sockman reporting on the second week of the 1989 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature. Lormand first reports on the week’s headlines. Next, Sockman reports on an anti-drug rally held by high school students from around the state on the steps of the State Capitol in Baton Rouge. His report includes: interviews with Dale Sisdrum of Converse, Shana Shelby of Destrehan, and Tane’ Quinoneas of Pleasant Hill; highlights of a speech given by Governor Buddy Roemer; and interviews with Donnie Walker of Morgan City and Stacy Smith of Leesville. Lastly, Lormand conducts a joint interview with Pete Adams, the executive director of the Louisiana District Attorneys Association, and Louisiana Attorney General William Guste. They discuss: the work of the Governor’s Drug Policy Committee in developing legislation; the bill creating drug free zones around schools; the asset seizure and forfeiture bill; Governor Roemer’s plan to utilize the Louisiana National Guard to help fight drug trafficking; the need for increased funding for the Louisiana State Police; bills related to crack houses and designer drugs; a bill increasing the penalties for the use of drugs and firearms; and the abortion case before the United States Supreme Court.
