Description

This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from February 24, 1989, features Ken Lormand and Roger Sockman reporting on the first week of the Special Session of the Louisiana Legislature. Lormand first reports on the week’s headlines. Next, Sockman reports on Governor Buddy Roemer’s opening address on his tax reform plan. His report includes: interviews with State Representatives Clyde Kimball, James David Cain, and Woody Jenkins; Dan Juneau, the president of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI), discussing LABI’s support for lowering the homestead exemption; and Mike Martin of the Coalition for a Healthier Louisiana expressing his support for an increase in the cigarette tax. Next, Lormand reports on the controversial swearing-in of David Duke, a former leader of the Ku Klux Klan, as a state representative. His report includes: State Representative Oden Bacque offering a challenge to the seating of Duke based on residency requirements; a press conference with Duke disputing Bacque’s claim; and an interview with Joe Walker, a New Orleans pollster, discussing the demographics of Duke’s district. Lastly, Lormand conducts a joint interview with State Representatives David Duke and Kip Holden. They discuss the impact of Duke’s election on Louisiana’s image and their differing views on affirmative action.
