Description

This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from October 28, 1988, features Ken Lormand and Roger Sockman reporting on the defeat of Governor Buddy Roemer’s tax reform plan during the last week of the second Special Session of the Louisiana Legislature. Sockman first reports on the defeat of the conference committee report in the House. His report includes: highlights of the debate on the House floor, including comments by State Representatives Ron Gomez, Bo Ackal, John Alario, and John Travis; interviews with State Senator Sammy Nunez and State Representatives Jess Smith, Donald Ray Kennard, Jimmy Long, and Harry Benoit; and highlights from a press conference with Governor Roemer. Lormand then conducts an in-studio interview with Bob Courtney of WBRZ-TV and Richard Baudouin of The Times of Acadiana. They discuss: their view of the special session; the public’s view of fiscal reform; the opposition coalitions; the difficulty in raising taxes in Louisiana; Governor Roemer’s legislative style; and the next steps for fiscal reform, including the possibility of a limited constitutional convention.
