This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from October 21, 1988, features Ken Lormand and Roger Sockman reporting on the third week of the second Special Session of the Louisiana Legislature and Governor Buddy Roemer’s fiscal reform plan. First, Lormand reports on the House and Senate passing portions of the tax reform plan. His report includes an interview with Governor Roemer. Next, Sockman reports on the alternative tax plan created by a coalition of legislators known as the Contras. His report includes interviews with: State Representative Allen Bradley; State Representative Peppi Bruneau; State Representative Al Ater; Governor Roemer; State Representative Roy Brun; and Ned Falgout, the chairman of Concerned Citizens of Louisiana. Lastly, Lormand conducts an in-studio interview with Mark Drennen, the president of the Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana, and Jefferson Parish Tax Assessor Lawrence Chehardy. They discuss: the major provisions of Governor Roemer’s tax reform plan; their differing views on the proposed changes to the homestead exemption; and Roemer’s plan to shift more authority to local governments.
