This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from May 20, 1988, features Ken Lormand and Roger Sockman reporting on the fifth week of the 1988 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature. Lormand first reports on the House Education Committee approving Governor Buddy Roemer’s education reform plan and Roemer’s meeting with state teacher groups on the plan. It includes interviews with Virginia Budd, president of the Louisiana Association of Educators, Shirleen Louviere of the Associated Professional Educators of Louisiana, and Dr. Wilmer Cody, Louisiana Superintendent of Education, as well as highlights of Governor Roemer testifying before the House Education Committee. Next, Sockman reports on the tort reform bills under consideration, including Wayne Fontana of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI) speaking at a press conference about LABI’s support of the bills and Charles Moore, the president of the Louisiana Trial Lawyers Association testifying against the bills. Sockman then reports on Governor Roemer’s speech to Louisiana Mayors about his support for bridge funding for local governments. He also interviews Brusly Mayor Rod Prejean, the president of the Louisiana Municipal Association. Lastly, Lormand profiles members of the Roemer Revolution, Governor’s Roemer staff, including highlights of a recent staff meeting. He interviews: Interim Commissioner of Administration Steve Cochran; Chief of Staff Len Sanderson; and Executive Counsel Tom Casey.
