Roedts first recaps the week’s activity at the session, including: State Senator B.B. “Sixty” Rayburn, the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, presenting an amendment to the state budget; State Senators Leonard Chabert, Fritz Windhorst, and Allen Bares, debating an amendment to the budget increasing the tuition at colleges and universities for out-of-state and international students; State Senator Don Kelly presenting an amendment to the budget allowing the state to use money from dedicated funds to pay the state’s bills when the state is experiencing cash flow issues; Gary Clements of the ACLU and State Representative Wilford Carter testifying on a bill requiring AIDS tests for couples requesting a marriage license; Linda Clark of the League of Women Voters, Carrie DeLorge, special education teacher, and Derinda Cantrell, parent, testifying on a bill lifting the ban on using federal money to fund sex education programs; State Representative Harry Benoit, State Senator Allen Bares, and Warren deBrueys of the Metropolitan Crime Commission testifying on a bill allowing off-track betting at horse racing tracks; and State Representative John Hainkel testifying on a bill allowing for a pilot project to privatize one Charity hospital. Next, Hinton reports on the week’s other headlines, including State Senator Tommy Hudson announcing his decision not to seek re-election and a press conference with Governor Edwin Edwards on the session. Hinton then interviews Gary Clements of the ACLU, who discusses their opposition to a defeated bill that would have allowed state officials to quarantine AIDS patients. Lastly, Hinton presents highlights of Governor Edwards discussing the decrease in the state’s unemployment rate.
