Description

This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from June 4, 1986, features Ken Johnson hosting a daily legislative report on the 1986 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature. Johnson first reports on the day’s headlines. These stories include: an interview with State Representative Melvin Irvin on a bill authorizing municipalities and parishes to levy a tax on bingo proceeds; an interview with State Representative Joseph Accardo on a bill scheduling the 1988 presidential primary on Super Tuesday; State Representative Avery Alexander testifying on his bills related to voter registration; and State Representative Peppi Bruneau testifying on his bill abolishing the Lieutenant Governor’s Office. Next, Karen Nachman reports on the House and Governmental Affairs Committee reporting unfavorably a bill moving unclassified employees in the executive branch under the management of state civil service regulations. Her report includes testimony by State Representative Richard Baker and Victor Bussie of the Louisiana AFL-CIO, as well as State Representatives Sherman Copelin and John Travis questioning Baker on his bill. Johnson then continues reporting on the day’s headlines. These stories include: an interview with State Representative Murray Hebert on a resolution calling for a redfish management study; an interview with State Representative Frank Patti on the timeline for hearing other redfish management bills; and an interview with State Representative Garey Forster on his bill repealing the limitations on the amount of money teachers can be docked for missing work. Next, Laura Myers reports on the Senate Finance Committee approving over $400 million in state budget cuts, including the entire budget of Louisiana Public Broadcasting. Her report includes comments by State Senators B.B. “Sixty” Rayburn, Foster Campbell, Fritz Windhorst, and J.E. Jumonville. Johnson then conducts an in-studio interview with State Senator Mike Cross, who discusses the proposed state budget cuts. Next, Johnson presents highlights of former Governor Jimmie Davis singing “You Are My Sunshine” on the House floor. Lastly, Johnson apologizes for airing footage of State Representative Raymond Jetson taking a nap on the House floor during his lunch break.
