This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from February 14, 1986, features a special report on infertility, a problem facing one out of every five couples in Louisiana. First, Ken Johnson reports on in vitro fertilization. He interviews: Denise McGaw of Houma, the mother of Louisiana’s first set of test tube triplets; Dr. Richard Dickey, the founder of the Fertility Institute of New Orleans; Dr. Kathleen Posey, obstetrician; Dr. Steven Taylor, infertility specialist; Dr. Heber Dunaway, Jr., infertility specialist; and the mother of the first test tube baby in Louisiana. Next, Laura Myers reports on the emotional side effects for couples struggling with infertility. She interviews: Amy Whitley and Ty Whitley of Baton Rouge; Susan Eaton, a social worker at Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge; and Dr. Marvin Stuckey of Woman’s Hospital. Lastly, Johnson conducts an in-studio interview with two infertility specialists, Dr. David Curole and Dr. Steven Taylor. They discuss: the increase in infertility due to couples waiting to have children; the psychological impact of infertility on a couple; the in vitro fertilization process; the male factor in infertility; the sperm donor program; and the joy associated with helping couples to have children.
