This segment from the November 9, 1984, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Ken Johnson’s report on the defeat of the Democratic Party in the 1984 presidential and statewide elections. Johnson reports that President Ronald Reagan won Louisiana with 61% of the vote and that all five constitutional amendments on the ballot were defeated, including four amendments related to Governor Edwin Edwards’ tax package. He interviews: State Representative Woody Jenkins, a Reagan supporter; Secretary of State Jim Brown; Ed Steimel, the president of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI); Marion Edwards, the chairman of the Walter Mondale campaign in Louisiana; and State Representative Joe Delpit, a Mondale supporter, who calls for the resignation of Jesse Bankston, the chairman of the Democratic State Central Committee.
