This segment from the September 21, 1984, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Ken Johnson’s report on Southeastern Louisiana University’s establishment of the Turtle Cove Biological Research Station at Pass Manchac as a part of a $200,000 federal grant to study the environment. Johnson reports that the swamp and marshland at Pass Manchac in St. John the Baptist Parish is dying possibly due to salt water intrusion and other pollution. He interviews: Dr. Gary Childers, the chairman of biology at SLU; Robert Hastings, the director of Turtle Cove; Ed Nelson, microbiologist; Mark Schexnayder, graduate student; and Karolyn Mueller, research technician.
