Description

This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from June 12, 1984, features Ken Johnson and Robyn Ekings hosting a daily legislative report on the 1984 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature. Johnson first reports on the day’s headlines. These stories include: interviews with Sharon Chandler and Marcella Praider, two state employees participating in a rally for 10% pay raises; an interview with Governor Edwin Edwards on the status of state employee pay raises and teacher pay raises; an interview with Speaker of the House John Alario on the possibility that the 1984 World’s Fair in New Orleans will not be able to pay back a $10 million loan to the state; an interview with Ed Steimel, the president of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI), on the status of the agency shop bill in the House; and an interview with State Representative Kevin Reilly, the chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, on the committee’s vote to pass the state budget out of committee with no amendments. Next, Ekings reports on a bill that would require public school students to maintain a “C” average in order to participate in extracurricular activities, including sports. Her report includes interviews with State Senator Foster Campbell, the bill’s sponsor, and State Representative Jon Johnson. Lastly, Johnson and Ekings conduct an in-studio interview with State Senator Foster Campbell and Tommy Henry, the commissioner of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA). They discuss Senator Campbell’s bill.
