Description

This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from April 23, 1984, features Robyn Ekings and Ken Johnson hosting a daily legislative report on the 1984 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature. Johnson reports on the day’s headlines, including an interview with Ed Steimel of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI) on his concerns over the pro-labor Labor and Industrial Relations Committees. Next, Ekings reports on the proposed mandatory licensing of child care centers. Her report includes an interview with State Representative Woody Jenkins, who discusses why he sponsored the repeal of the licensing requirements in 1980. Lastly, Johnson and Ekings conduct an in-studio interview with two representatives from child care centers, Joe Higginbotham of Gonzales and Judy Montgomery of Baton Rouge. They discuss: their stance on the mandatory licensing proposal; the current requirements in place for day care centers; the impact of mandatory licensing on child care centers operated by churches; and the reasons why many child care center operators are against mandatory licensing.
