This segment from the October 17, 1980, episode of “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features an interview with Dr. Joseph Johnson, the president of Grambling State University. He discusses the lawsuit filed by the United States Department of Justice against the State of Louisiana alleging that the state runs a dual system of higher education based on race, the need to fix past discrepancies in funding for historically black universities in the state, the importance of Grambling having a distinct professional program in north Louisiana, the majority of high school students being unprepared for college and his waning optimism that the lawsuit can be settled out of court.
