This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from January 22, 2020, features Andre Moreau leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on vaping in Louisiana. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. It includes interviews with: Ronnie Plascia of Big Chief Vapor Products; Tonia Moore of the Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living; Falon Brown, a senior at the LSU Manship School of Mass Communication; and Dr. Dawn Marcelle of the Louisiana Department of Health. The audience members then share their thoughts on vaping among youth and adults. A panel of experts then joins the audience to answer their questions. The panelists are: Dr. Alex Billioux, the Assistant Secretary for the Office of Public Health at the Louisiana Department of Health; Heather Hutton, the president of the Louisiana Vaping Association; Shelina Davis, the CEO of the Louisiana Public Health Institute; and Falon Brown, a senior at the LSU Manship School of Mass Communication. They discuss: whether vaping is a problem in Louisiana; vaping prevention campaigns for youth and young adults; enforcing the flavor ban on vaping products; the lung illnesses caused by illegal black market cartridges; the lack of long-term research on the effects of vaping; how the schools are combating teen vaping; vaping as a smoking cessation tool for adults; the resources available to schools to teach teens about the dangers associated with vaping; and the responsibility of the vaping industry in combating the youth vaping epidemic.
