Description
This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from July 24, 2019, features Natasha Williams leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on preventing gun violence among Louisiana’s youth. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. It includes interviews with: Murray “Coach” Tate, the parent of a son killed by gun violence; Chief Murphy Paul of the Baton Rouge Police Department; Greg Phares, the Chief Criminal Deputy of the East Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office and a firearms instructor; and Angelle Bradford of Moms Demand Action. The audience members then discuss the most effective strategies for curbing gun violence among Louisiana’s youth. A panel of experts then joins the audience members to answer their questions. The panelists are: Aishala Burgess, the executive director of Truce; East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore III; Reggie Morgan, an entrepreneur and organizer of the Let It Slide movement; and Deputy Chief Jonathan Dunnam of the Baton Rouge Police Department. They discuss: how Louisiana is addressing youth violence; teaching children about gun safety; mental health; the role of the educational system and youth in reducing gun violence; teaching conflict resolution; the fear of school shootings; the snitch stigma; the importance of speaking up; the work of Crime Stoppers; and the need for community building.
