This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from July 25, 2018, features Andre Moreau leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on preventing suicide. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. It includes interviews with: Emma Benoit, suicide survivor; Barney LeJeune, the executive director of the Jacob Crouch Suicide Prevention Services in Lafayette; Dr. Frank Campbell, a suicidologist; and Dr. April Foreman, a licensed psychologist at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Healthcare System. The audience members then share their stories of how they have been impacted by suicide. A panel of experts then joins the audience to answer their questions. The panelists are: Danita LeBlanc, the suicide prevention coordinator with the Louisiana Department of Health; Dr. Raymond Tucker, the founder of the LSU Mitigation of Suicidal Behavior Research Laboratory; Tonja Miles, a suicide survivor and recovery advocate; and Cynthia Elmer, the board chair of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention in Louisiana. They discuss: the biggest misconceptions about suicide; the warning signs; the importance of overcoming the stigma of suicide; how to help someone who is exhibiting suicidal behavior; the training received by school personnel; online resources; the risk factors; and the connection between firearms and suicide.
