Description
This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from March 28, 2018, features Andre Moreau leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on preventing the threat of gun violence in Louisiana schools in the wake of the mass shooting in Parkland, Florida. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion, including a look at the school resource officer program in Bossier Parish. It includes interviews with: Superintendent Scott Smith of the Bossier Parish Schools; Bossier Parish Sheriff Julian Whittington; Lieutenant Adam Johnson, the chief of security for Bossier Parish Schools; and Dr. Megan Medley, a school psychologist. The audience members then share their views on how to make schools safe. A panel of experts then joins the audience to answer their questions. The panelists are: Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard; Dr. Betty Muller, a child and adolescent psychiatrist; State Senator Neil Riser; and Scott Richard, the executive director of the Louisiana School Boards Association. They discuss: the threat of school shootings in Louisiana; the crisis intervention plans put together by schools; the need to improve mental health services in schools; the effectiveness of school resource officers; the importance of children learning conflict resolution; and the increase in student activism following the Parkland shooting. Hosts: Beth Courtney and Andre Moreau
