Description

This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from April 26, 2017, features Andre Moreau leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on the state’s 2017 coastal master plan. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. The report includes interviews with Bren Haase of the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA), Congressman Garret Graves, Brad Inman of the United States Army Corps of Engineers, and Don Beshel of Beshel’s Marina. The audience members then discuss: their view of the coastal master plan; the sediment diversion projects in the plan; the recent discovery of an invasive species that eats marsh cane; and the relocation of the Isle de Jean Charles community due to land loss. A panel of experts then joins the audience to answer their questions. The panelists are: Bren Haase of the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority; Captain George Ricks of the Save Louisiana Coalition; Dr. Denise Reed of the Water Institute of the Gulf; and Mark Schleifstein of Nola.com and the Times-Picayune. They discuss: their grade for the coastal master plan; the upcoming changes to the flood insurance program; the impact of the plan on fisheries; what would happen if the state did not act now; and sediment diversion projects. Hosts: Beth Courtney and Andre Moreau
