Description
This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from October 26, 2016, features Patricia Smith leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on Louisiana’s 2016 United States Senate election. A background report on the twenty-four candidate race precedes the discussion. The audience members discuss the issues that are most important to them in this election. A panel of experts then joins the audience to answer their questions. The panelists are: Greg Hilburn of the Gannett Newspapers; Dr. Albert Samuels of the Mandela School of Public Policy at Southern University; Elizabeth Crisp of The Advocate newspaper; and Dr. Martin Johnson of the LSU Manship School of Mass Communication. They discuss: the unique elements of this election; the candidates’ views on the mass incarceration of African American males and the relationship between law enforcement and people of color; the impact of the historic flooding in south Louisiana on voter turnout; the lack of polling in the race; the candidates’ views on big government, government regulations, confirming Supreme Court nominees, their willingness to compromise, and government spending; the constitutional amendments on the ballot; and the potential dynamics of the run-off election. Hosts: Beth Courtney and Patricia Smith
