This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from September 23, 2015, features Bob Courtney leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on the major issues of the 2015 gubernatorial election. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. It includes interviews with: Michael Henderson of the LSU Public Policy Research Lab; Dr. Pearson Cross, a political science professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (ULL); and Robert Travis Scott, the president of the Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana (PAR). It also includes highlights of comments by the four major gubernatorial candidates, State Representative John Bel Edwards (D), Lieutenant Governor Jay Dardenne (R), Public Service Commissioner Scott Angelle (R), and United States Senator David Vitter (R). The audience members then discuss their views on the most important issues in the election. A panel of experts then joins the audience to answer their questions. The panelists are: Dr. Joshua Stockley, a political science professor at the University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM); Camille Conaway, the vice president of policy research with the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI); Reverend Raymond Jetson, a former state legislator; and Barry Erwin, the president and CEO of the Council for a Better Louisiana (CABL). They discuss: the biggest challenges facing Louisiana; the future of higher education; the state’s high poverty rate; keeping youth in the state; tax credits; the candidates not expressing their vision for the state; state budget concerns; the biggest challenges facing candidates for the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE); child care and early childhood education; voter apathy; and services for people with disabilities.
