This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from March 25, 2015, features Donna Britt leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on cancer in Louisiana. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. It includes interviews with: Dr. Jordan Karlitz of the Tulane Medical School; Dr. Xiao-Cheng Wu, the director of the Louisiana Tumor Registry; Dr. Karen DeSalvo, the acting assistant secretary of health for the United States Department of Health and Human Services; Dr. Michael Castine, an oncologist with the Hematology and Oncology Clinic in Baton Rouge; Dr. Paul Sylvester of the University of Louisiana at Monroe; and Dr. Augusto Ochoa of the Louisiana Cancer Research Center. The audience members then discuss the reasons for Louisiana’s high cancer rates. A panel of experts then joins the audience to answer their questions. The panelists are: Dr. Louis Barfield, a surgeon with the Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center in Baton Rouge; Dr. Elizabeth Fontham, the founding dean of the LSU School of Public Health; Dr. Gerald Miletello, an oncologist with the Hematology and Oncology Clinic and the Pennington Cancer Center at the Baton Rouge General; and Dr. Glenn Mills of the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center in Shreveport. They discuss: where Louisiana stands in the battle against cancer; sarcoma; colorectal cancers; encouraging cancer screenings; the high cost of cancer treatments; clinical trials; environmental factors that increase cancer risks; dietary risks; the increase in targeted therapies; the increase in cancer rates among younger people; and vaccine trials.
