Description

This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from July 23, 2014, features Charlie Whinham leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on mental health services and mental illness in Louisiana. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. It includes interviews with: Kevin Robshaw, the director of Mental Health Advocacy Services; Nick Richard of the St. Tammany Parish chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness; Bill O’Quin, the parent of a child with mental illness who died in police custody; and Tracy Moseley, an individual in recovery. The audience members then discuss their interactions with people who have a mental illness. A panel of experts then joins the audience to answer their questions. The panelists are: Dr. Beau Clark, the coroner in East Baton Rouge Parish; Dr. Rochelle Head-Dunham, the interim secretary of the Office of Behavioral Health at the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals; Assumption Parish Sheriff Michael Waguespack, the president of the Louisiana Sheriffs Association; and Dr. Michael Blue, a forensic psychiatrist at Tulane University. They discuss: their roles in interacting with people with mental illnesses; how to help homeless people with mental illnesses; the mental health services available in the state; how to deal with people who pose a danger to themselves or others; the warning signs of a mental illness; and whether people with a mental illness should be mandated to receive care. Hosts: Beth Courtney and Charlie Whinham
