Description

This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from March 27, 2013, features Robert Travis Scott leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on Governor Bobby Jindal’s tax reform plan, which eliminates the income tax and increases the sales tax. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. The audience members discuss: the fairness of taxes in Louisiana; the purpose of taxes; the role of government; and their view of Jindal’s proposed plan. A panel of experts then joins the audience to answer their questions. The panelists are: Tim Barfield, the Executive Counsel for the Louisiana Department of Revenue; State Representative John Bel Edwards; Kimberly Lewis Robinson, a tax attorney with Jones Walker; and Rob Guidry of the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce. They discuss: their views of the tax reform plan; the proposed tax on services; the impact of the plan on lower income individuals; the proposed rebate program for retirees; the impact of the plan on banks and entrepreneurs; the proposed consolidation of the collection of sales tax for state and local governments; the impact of the plan on education funding; and whether the plan is revenue neutral. Hosts: Beth Courtney and Robert Travis Scott
