Description
This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from January 25, 2012, features Michael Climek leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on civic engagement in Louisiana. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. It includes interviews with: Secretary of State Tom Schedler; Dr. Albert Samuels, the chairman of the political science department at Southern University; Chief Justice Kitty Kimball of the Louisiana Supreme Court; Lieutenant Governor Jay Dardenne; Jennifer Eplett Reilly of City Year Louisiana; Chris Chemel of Occupy Baton Rouge; and State Representative Steve Carter. The audience members then discuss three types of civic engagement: political participation, volunteerism, and protests. A panel of experts then joins the audience to answer their questions. The panelists are: Janet Pace, the executive director of the Louisiana Serve Commission; Dr. Kurt Corbello, an associate professor of political science at Southeastern Louisiana University; Dr. Brenda Birkett, the president of the Baton Rouge chapter of The Links, Incorporated; and State Representative Karen St. Germain. They discuss: the level of civic engagement in Louisiana; encouraging youth participation; the role of religion in volunteerism; the lack of women in Louisiana politics; promoting volunteer opportunities; and the media’s responsibility in the political process. Hosts: Beth Courtney and Michael Climek
