Description
This special episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from July 27, 2011, features a discussion between panelists and GulfWatch reporters from Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida on the continued challenges facing the Gulf Coast more than a year after the BP Oil Spill. GulfWatch is a consortium of ten public television and radio stations covering issues related to the BP Oil Spill. The panelists are: Don Briggs of the Louisiana Oil and Gas Association; Dr. Ed Overton of the LSU School of the Coast and Environment; attorney Jeffrey Breight, a member of the plaintiffs steering committee for BP litigation; Kenneth Feinberg, the administrator of the Gulf Coast Claims Facility (GCCF); and Garret Graves of the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority. The discussion was preceded by background reports on: the impact of the moratorium on deep water drilling in the Gulf of Mexico on the oil and gas industry in Louisiana; frustrations with the GCCF in Louisiana; the effect of the oil spill on tourism on the Alabama Gulf Coast; the University of South Florida’s research into the environmental impact of the spill; and concerns over seafood safety in Mississippi. The panelists discuss: concerns over the GCCF claims process; the economic impact of the moratorium on oil drilling; the safety of offshore drilling; tourism; the impact of the spill on marine life; concerns over BP’s involvement with the environmental assessments; priorities for coastal restoration projects in Louisiana; and the impact of the spill on the seafood industry.
