Description

This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from January 26, 2011, features Robert Travis Scott leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on strategies for saving higher education. A background report on the recent and proposed budget cuts to higher education precedes the discussion. It includes interviews with: J. Hudson, president of the LSU Student Government; Dr. Stephen T. Hulbert, the president of Nicholls State University; Bob Ley, the chairman of the Louisiana Board of Regents; Barry Erwin, the president of the Council for a Better Louisiana (CABL); and Richard Zuschlag, a member of the Louisiana Flagship Coalition. The audience members then discuss: the state’s spending on higher education; their willingness to pay higher taxes; raising tuition; the TOPS program; whether Louisiana has too many four-year schools; and the debate over giving more resources to LSU instead of the state’s other colleges and universities. A panel of experts then joins the audience to answer their questions. The panelists are: Stephen Waguespack, the executive counsel to Governor Bobby Jindal; State Representative Austin Badon, the chairman of the House Education Committee; Thomas Layzell, an advisor to the Louisiana Board of Regents; and Sean Reilly, a co-founder of the Louisiana Flagship Coalition. They discuss: the cuts to higher education; graduation rates; the proposed merger of the University of New Orleans (UNO) and Southern University in New Orleans (SUNO); the work of the Louisiana Flagship Coalition in identifying efficiencies; unlocking the statutory dedications in the state budget; and the work of the Board of Regents in reforming the higher education system.
