This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from February 27, 2008, features Craig Freeman leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on violent crime in Louisiana. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. It includes interviews with: Dr. Holley Galland; Jim Craft, Lafayette Chief of Police; Martha Forbes, director at the Capital Area Family Violence Intervention Center; Cecile Guin, director of the LSU Office of Social Services Research and Development; and Lauren Noel, local high school student ambassador for Rachel’s Challenge. The audience members then discuss their views on how to curb violent crime rates and the effects of education, poverty levels and parental involvement on violent crime. A panel of experts then joins the audience to answer their questions. The panelists are: Dr. Matt Lee, LSU Crime and Policy Evaluation Research; Tony Clayton, assistant district attorney for West Baton Rouge Parish; Shelton Dennis Blunt, president of the Baton Rouge chapter of 100 Black Men; and State Senator Julie Quinn. They discuss the major causes of violent crime and how to address societal issues that lead to higher crime rates.
