This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from November 28, 2007, features Craig Freeman leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on the economic and social impacts of trade between China and Louisiana. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. It includes interviews with: Eugene Schneiber, executive director at the World Trade Center in New Orleans; Ewell Smith, Louisiana Seafood and Marketing Board; Justin Brownfield, manager at a local food store; Commissioner Bob Odom of the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry; and Dee Dee Culotta, owner of Victoria’s Toy Station. The audience members then discuss their views on purchasing Chinese-made vs. American-made products, the differences between foreign and domestic labor policies, and the lack of health and safety standard on imported products. A panel of experts then joins the audience to answer their questions. The panelists are: Sara Bongiorni, author of “A Year Without ‘Made in China’”; Larry Collins, head of the international division of the Louisiana Department of Economic Development; and Lee Ann Lockridge, LSU School of Law. They discuss: the impacts of copyright infringement on American products being sold illegally overseas, the benefits of international trade on Louisiana’s economy, and how to improve health and safety standards for imported products to reduce the burden of recalls.
