This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from June 27, 2007, features Craig Freeman leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on Louisiana’s perspective on the War in Iraq. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. It includes interviews with: Major General Hunt Downer of the Louisiana National Guard; Dr. Jim Richardson, economist; Colonel Dan Charchian of the United States Air Force; Elliott Stonecipher, political analyst; General Charles Campbell of the United States Army; Reverend Steve Crump of the Unitarian Church of Baton Rouge; Danny Champlin, retired from the United States Marine Corps; and Michelle McCrary, a family assistance specialist with the Louisiana National Guard. The audience members then discuss their views on how the war in Iraq has affected life in Louisiana, both economically and socially, and their opinions on progress in the war. A panel of experts then joins the audience to answer their questions. The panelists are: Lieutenant Colonel Scott Adams, 2-108th Cavalry, Louisiana National Guard; Roxann Johnson, executive director of the Shreveport YWCA; John Prime, journalist with the Shreveport Times; and Dr. Phillip Barker, a professor of political science and history at Centenary College. They discuss: the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder and ways to aid soldiers in the transition back to home life; the news media’s effect on public opinion of the Iraq War; and how to support United States troops while also opposing the war.
