This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from February 15, 2006, features Kirby Goidel leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on the promotion of Louisiana’s culture and heritage as an asset for economic development. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. It includes interviews with: author Andrei Codresen; Todd Mouton, a local musician and music producer; Chef John Folse; Alex Schoot, head of the State Film Commission; Brenden O’Connor, Chairman of Celtic Media; and Carl Brasseaux, a Professor of culture and tourism of University of Louisiana Lafayette. The audience members then discuss their views on developing a thriving economy based on Louisiana’s heritage and culture and how to promote culture and heritage as not only a tourist attraction, but also an educational tool for Louisiana’s citizens. A panel of experts then joins the audience to answer their questions. The panelists are: Professor Barry Jean Ancelet of the University of Louisiana Lafayette; Pam Atchinson, director of the Shreveport Regional Arts Council; Mark Smith, of the Entertainment Section of the Louisiana Department of Economic Development; and Pam Breaux, head of the Office of Cultural Development (CRT). They discuss: tax incentives to bring film production to Louisiana and how to utilize Louisiana’s cultural economy without exploiting or “Disney-fying” people’s culture. This program was preserved through a 2022-2023 Public Broadcasting Preservation Fellowship.
