This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from August 17, 2005, features Craig Freeman leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on youth and politics. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. It includes interviews with: Amanda Powell, Clay Harris, and Marie Langlois, young voters; Adrienne Moore, the director of LSU’s Reilly Center for Media and Public Affairs; Justin McCorkle, the SGA president at Southern University; Jimmy Dunphy, young voter; J.T. Hannan, Republican strategist; State Representative Terrell Harris; Stephen Moret, the president of the Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce; Lynn Clark, Habitat for Humanity; Michelle Gieg, the SGA president at LSU; and Sarah Beth Markway, the former president of the Louisiana Young Democrats. The audience members then discuss why they vote, their news sources, and whether politicians listen to their generation. A panel of experts then joins the audience to answer their questions. The panelists are: State Representative Steve Scalise; Kristy Davis, LSU journalism major and former MTV correspondent; and State Representative Michael Jackson. They discuss: the cost of political campaigns; how they got involved in politics; reaching young voters; communicating with their constituents; the biggest issues facing Louisiana; and their visits to schools to teach younger students about the political process.
