Description

This episode of the “McLeod Lecture Series” from May 2, 2013, features moderator Beth Courtney leading a discussion on overcoming government gridlock in a partisan environment. The panelists are: Dennis Stine, a former state legislator and Commissioner of Administration; Bob Mann, the director of the Reilly Center for Media and Public Affairs at the LSU Manship School of Mass Communication; and Reverend Raymond Jetson, a former state legislator. Prior to the discussion, Shauna Sanford presents a look back at the nine previous “McLeod Lecture Series” discussions. The panelists then discuss: redistricting as a cause of gridlock; the rise of one-issue lawmakers; the impact of lobbyists on the political process; partisanship at both the state and federal level; the growth of the two-party system in the Louisiana Legislature; the impact of term limits on the Legislature; the motivations of politicians; the impact of the 24-hour news cycle and social media on politics; the role of religion in the political process; the state budget; the issue of poverty in Louisiana; and their hope for the future. The McLeod Lecture Series event is a part of the McNeese State University Banners Series.
