Description

This episode of the “McLeod Lecture Series” from May 3, 2009, features moderator Beth Courtney leading a panel of Louisiana women reflecting on the unique legacy of the state’s elected female leaders. The panelists are Chief Justice Catherine “Kitty” Kimball of the Louisiana Supreme Court, State Senator Sharon Weston Broome, State Senator Willie Mount, and State Representative Jane Holland Smith. They discuss: running for office; providing a different perspective on issues; feeling pressure as a woman in elected office; their biggest surprises when entering the Legislature and Supreme Court; the excitement of winning their first elections; the burden of leadership during difficult times, like hurricanes; the support of their husbands; their current goals in office; the issue of health care; their future plans; and their thoughts on serving in public office. Their discussion is preceded by a prerecorded message from United States Senator Mary Landrieu and a clip from a documentary on former Congresswoman Lindy Boggs. The McLeod Lecture Series event is a part of the McNeese State University Banners Series.
