This episode of the series “Louisiana Legends” from April 17, 2011, features an interview with Paul Dietzel conducted by Beth Courtney. Dietzel served as the LSU head football coach from 1955-1961 and the LSU Athletic Director from 1978-1982. He discusses: the importance of LSU to his career; his early childhood in Ohio; meeting his wife Anne in high school; receiving a football scholarship to Duke University; his time in the Army Air Corps flying B-29 bombers in the Pacific during World War II; his studies at Miami University in Ohio; his assistant coaching positions at Miami University and West Point; becoming the head coach of LSU at age 30; the origin of the name “Chinese Bandits”; winning the 1958 National Championship; football’s dominance in Louisiana; and his painting career.
