Dietzel served as the LSU head football coach from 1955-1961 and the LSU Athletic Director from 1978-1982. He discusses: the importance of LSU to his career; his early childhood in Ohio; meeting his wife Anne in high school; receiving a football scholarship to Duke University; his time in the Army Air Corps flying B-29 bombers in the Pacific during World War II; his studies at Miami University in Ohio; his assistant coaching positions at Miami University and West Point; becoming the head coach of LSU at age 30; the origin of the name “Chinese Bandits”; winning the 1958 National Championship; football’s dominance in Louisiana; and his painting career.
