This segment from the March 22, 2024, episode of the series “Art Rocks!” features Dorothy Kendrick’s report on the opening of the African American Portrait Gallery at the Martin Luther King. Jr. Branch of the Rapides Parish Library in Alexandria, which honors the achievements of some of the city’s most accomplished sons and daughters. Her report includes highlights of the unveiling of the portraits. She also interviews: Morris Taft Thomas, artist and former educator; Fannietta Johnson, artist; Celise Reech-Harper, the director of the Rapides Parish Libraries; and Colonel Katrina Lloyd of the Louisiana National Guard, one of the honorees of the portrait gallery.
