Description
Jim Engster of the Louisiana Radio Network moderates a debate sponsored by the Louisiana Association of Educators on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge on October 12, 2011, between seven candidates for Governor: Niki Bird Papazoglakis (D); Tara Hollis (D); David Blanchard (I); Cary Deaton (D); Leonard Bollingham (I); Scott Lewis (L); and Trey Roberts (D). The incumbent, Governor Bobby Jindal, declined the invitation to participate in the debate. The candidates answer questions on the following topics: balancing the state budget; raising the cigarette tax; improving education; the role of historically black colleges and universities in the economic development of the state; capturing the wealth from oil and gas companies; who they support in the Lieutenant Governor’s race; and whether they believe in creationism or the theory of evolution. The debate ends with each candidate’s closing statement.
