Description
Andre Moreau hosts live coverage of Governor John Bel Edwards’ opening address to the 2020 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature on March 9, 2020. Prior to the speech, Moreau, Barry Erwin of the Council for a Better Louisiana (CABL), and reporter Natasha Williams preview the Governor’s speech and the session. In the House chamber, Father Michael Allelo of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Baton Rouge leads a prayer and Patterson Mayor Rodney Grogan sings the National Anthem. During his speech, Governor Edwards discusses: the state’s response to COVID-19, or the coronavirus; the first presumptive positive case in Louisiana; his state budget proposal, including increases in higher education, K-12 education, and early childhood education; expanding the Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) programs around the state; increasing the minimum wage and closing the gender pay gap; establishing a maternal mortality review; and lowering the high cost of auto insurance in the state. Following the speech, Moreau and Erwin analyze the Governor’s remarks.
