This segment from the February 4, 1990, episode of the series “Folks” features Sonya Masingale’s interview with Dr. Anthony Barthelemy, an English professor at Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge and the author of “Black Face, Maligned Race: The Representation of Blacks in English Drama from Shakespeare to Southerne.” He discusses: the origins of color prejudice; the depiction of blacks as evil; the ancient tradition of maligning black people in politics; Shakespeare’s depiction of Othello; and why he decided to write the book.
