This segment from the October 12, 1986, episode of the series “Folks” features Rob Hinton’s profile of painter Jacob Lawrence, a recent recipient of the Amistad Research Center’s Fine Arts Award. He discusses: growing up in Harlem, New York, during the Great Depression; studying art at a Works Progress Administration (WPA) art center; meeting artists from the Harlem Renaissance; his work with the WPA; his series of paintings of Haitian General Toussaint L’Ouverture; his painting style; and painting about the human struggle. Hinton also interviews Lou Stovall, a printmaker, who discusses his collaboration with Lawrence.
