Description
This segment from the February 17, 1985, episode of the series “Folks” features Rob Hinton’s report on the history of Leland University, one of the oldest black colleges in Louisiana. Hinton reports that the school opened in 1870 in New Orleans, moved to Baker in 1923, and closed in 1960. He visits the ruins of the school in Baker and interviews Dorothea Carter and Ollie Chase, two Leland alumnae, who discuss their memories and experiences at Leland University. Hinton also interviews Reverend Lionel Lee, who discusses his research into the history of Leland University, including the lack of financial support that led to the closure of the school.
