This segment from the October 28, 1984, episode of the series “Folks” features Rob Hinton’s report on the shortage of black nurses. He visits the National Black Nurses Association Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana, and interviews president Ophelia Long. She discusses: the technological changes in the nursing profession; their concerns for the care of their patients following changes by the Reagan Administration; the organization’s efforts to get out the vote in the upcoming election; and the reasons for the shortage. Hinton also interviews Carol Carter of Phoenix, Arizona, at the 1984 World’s Fair in New Orleans, who discusses her efforts to recruit nurses.
