This episode of the series “Folks” from May 8, 1983, focuses on the Tourgee DeBose National Piano Competition at Southern University in Baton Rouge. Genevieve Stewart first looks back at the career of pianist Tourgee DeBose. She interviews Mallalieu Turner, a student of DeBose, and Myrtle David, the director of the piano competition. Rob Hinton then introduces the highlights of a performance by Joel Martin of Princess Anne, Maryland, the winner of the 1982 Young Artists’ competition. Lastly, Genevieve Stewart presents highlights from the 1983 Young Artists’ competition, including performances by Kimberly Johnson, Candace Means, Karla Pate, Loletheia Turnipseed, John Gray, Clark Joseph, and Michaele Dolliole.
