Description
In this episode of the series “Enviro-Tacklebox” from September 18, 2002, host Greg Grandy and the student reporters explore the use of prescribed burns in forestry management and the dangers of wildfires. Grandy visits the Kisatchie National Forest in Louisiana and the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge to learn more about prescribed burns, their benefits to plants and wildlife, and the wildland urban interface. At Kisatchie, he interviews: Jim Caldwell, public affairs officer; Bobby Sebastian, district ranger; Holly Morgan, timber manager; Emilyn Smith, wildlife biologist; Sue Grace, ecologist at the National Wetlands Research Center; and Anthony Page, firefighter. He also interviews Tony Wilder in Mississippi. Grandy also highlights the history of Smokey Bear and the major fires in Yellowstone National Park during the summer of 1988. Lastly, Grandy visits the Sunset Fire Tower in Glenmora, Louisiana, and interviews Assistant Fire Chief Ed Robichaux, who discusses his work in detecting fires.
