Description

In this episode of the series “Enviro-Tacklebox” from October 24, 2001, host Greg Grandy and the student reporters explore the environmental impact of urban sprawl, including the strain on public utilities, increased traffic, flooding, and habitat loss. They highlight the following cities and issues: the increased demand on the water system in Phoenix, Arizona; the increased traffic and drainage problems in Mandeville, Louisiana; the efforts of students at Pelican Island Elementary School in Sebastian, Florida, to save the scrub habitat next to their school; the smart growth and planning in Celebration, Florida; and the urban growth boundary in Portland, Oregon. They interview: Paul Yi, Phoenix resident; Joe Mistitch, public works director in Mandeville; Carrie Segrave and Phillip Segrave, Mandeville residents; Nicole Hess and Tabby Simmons, ECO troop members in Sebastian; Terry Baird, ECO troop advisor in Sebastian; Andrea Finger, publicity representative for Celebration; Kirby Ryan III and Erin Baird, Celebration residents; Rex Burkholder, a member of the Portland Metro Council; Robert Clay, chief planner in Portland; and Karen Hernandez, a city planner.
